Suspected hacker arrested in Dubai
A young European computer programmer has been arrested
in the United Arab Emirates on charges of hacking into
the local internet network and causing two weeks of chaos.
Local press reports named the man as Lee Ashour Syed and
said he was British. The problems for the UAE's only ISP,
Etisalat, have come at an embarrassing time for the
authorities. And they have given ammunition to local
critics of the state's monopoly role over telecommunications.

Is White House Tracking Web Users?
Big Brother isn't just watching you, he may be inside
your computer, scanning your movements on the Web.
That's what some privacy experts fear is behind an
online advertising effort by the White House drug office
that is inserting a digital "cookies" into the hard drives
of Internet users who land on Web pages sporting anti-drug
banner ads.

Committee takes time with Internet Security Bill
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is revising a bill that
responds to a variety of concerns about Internet security
and privacy, and the committee chairman plans to schedule
a vote on it before the July 4 holiday recess, a committee
lawyer said Tuesday. The committee last week was to consider
amendments to the Internet Integrity and Critical
Infrastructure Protection Act, but the bill's sponsor,
Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, a Republican from
Utah, decided to shelve it because of concerns raised by
information technology industry officials and privacy
advocates, said Manus Cooney, chief counsel for the
committee.

Firewall Software Makers Tap Growing Market After Hack Attacks
In a typical month, would-be hackers probe Bob Larribeau's
computer a dozen times. Larribeau isn't a bank executive
or a high school principal. He doesn't run a fancy Web site
such as Yahoo! Inc. What makes the self-employed computer
consultant an attractive target is his high-speed Internet
connection.

What Kind of Germ Creates a Computer Virus?
I am tired of these viruses. Every morning, I come into work,
relatively chipper and ready to face the day. Problem is, more
mornings than not, I'm met with the dispiriting news that a
new high-tech bug is stalking my computer. By 10:30 or so,
I've reached a state of low-grade panic; I have a third cup
of coffee and imagine the virus circling my e-mail in-box like
a vulture hunting for injured prey. And I know I'm in for it,
because let's face facts: In the grand scheme of the Internet
world, I'm roughly the equivalent of a field mouse who's had
both its knees kicked in.
